# Moodle alternative: when a custom platform is the better fit > Looking for a Moodle alternative? [Moodle](https://moodle.org/) is free and open source, and it's very complete for courses, quizzes and grading. Universities run on it. But it's free the way a puppy is free: someone has to feed it, walk it and take it to the vet. In practice, the reasons I hear from training centres and academies are always the same: - **The server.** Self-hosting means [a web server, PHP, a database and scheduled background jobs](https://docs.moodle.org/500/en/Installing_Moodle), then updates, backups and plugin upgrades. Without an IT person, that lands on whoever is "good with computers". - **Payments.** [Moodle only includes PayPal as standard](https://docs.moodle.org/500/en/Payment_gateways); every other payment gateway is a plugin. If your learners pay by local card, bank transfer or in instalments, you're assembling that yourself. - **The look.** Making Moodle feel like your brand, on a phone, takes theme work. Learners judge a course by its first screen. - **The way you run things.** Cohorts with seats, admissions, a sales team following up leads, parents who pay for their children: these live outside Moodle, in spreadsheets and chat groups. ## Moodle alternatives: the three routes **1. Keep Moodle, but let someone else host it.** [MoodleCloud](https://moodle.com/solutions/moodlecloud/) is Moodle's own hosted service, with video conferencing included for up to 100 users. You get Moodle without the server, but it's still Moodle: the same interface and the same plugin logic. **2. A hosted LMS.** LearnWorlds, Teachable, Thinkific, TalentLMS and others. It's a furnished flat: you move in within days, but you can't knock down walls. You pay every month, and each plan has its limits. CCL paid LearnWorlds $254.15 a month and still ran its live classes on Zoom. **3. Your own platform.** A house built on your plans: the features you actually use, your payment methods, your languages, on your server with your data. Anyone with the link can join, and the recording ends up somewhere else. On CCL and Schoolaris, the video room is part of the platform: only enrolled learners get in, and each recording comes back to the learner's space. Decide what moves and what stays archived. 3. **Payments:** list every way your learners pay today, including the offline ones. 4. **Languages:** which ones, and does any of them read right to left, like Arabic? 5. **Who runs it after launch:** updates, backups and support, whichever route you choose.
