Polypro Academy: self-paced language learning with AI speaking practice

Polypro Academy is a self-paced language-learning platform, starting with English. Learners take a placement test, follow lessons at their CEFR level and practise speaking with an AI partner whenever they want. It runs on the web in English, French and Arabic, with iOS and Android apps on the same backend.

I built and maintain Polypro Academy, its website and its iOS and Android apps, as full-stack developer at CCL.

The client

Polypro Academy is for language learners, wherever they live, who want to learn at their own pace without waiting for a teacher or a fixed class schedule. English is the language available today, with a path from A1 to C2. Learners can start on a free plan and subscribe through Stripe, organisations can buy licences for their people, and creators can join an affiliate programme.

What they needed

When you learn on your own, you need to start at the right level, so the lessons are neither too easy nor too hard, and you need speaking practice without a teacher in the room. So the platform needed a placement test, a clear path from one level to the next, and conversation practice that answers back.

It also had to be the same everywhere: one account, the same lessons and the same progress on the website, in three languages, and in the mobile apps. And one way of selling wasn't enough: subscriptions for individuals, licences for organisations and commissions for affiliates.

What I built

  • A CEFR placement test

After creating a free account, the learner takes a test that estimates their level from A1 to C2 and opens the course at the right starting point. The result is a placement, not an official qualification, and the site says so.

  • Structured lessons, more than 12 exercise types

Each level is split into sublevels with lessons and quizzes, using exercises such as gap fills, sentence arrangement, flash cards, listen-and-select and drag and drop. The next sublevel opens once the learner has completed enough lessons and passed the quiz.

  • AI chat and voice roleplay

Learners rehearse real-life conversations with an AI partner, in writing or out loud. Speech is transcribed, then an AI grader scores the conversation on grammar, vocabulary and fluency; Claude, Gemini and ElevenLabs are part of the stack.

  • A website in three languages, apps on one backend

The website runs in English, French and Arabic (Next.js with next-intl), and the iOS and Android apps, currently in beta, are built with Expo and React Native. All of them use the same backend (Bun, Elysia, Prisma and PostgreSQL), so a learner's lessons and progress are the same everywhere.

  • Certificates anyone can check

Depending on their plan, learners earn a PDF certificate for each level they complete, with a serial number and a QR code that anyone can check on the site's verification page.

  • Subscriptions, licences and affiliates

Plans are paid through Stripe. Partner organisations get licence keys for their learners, and affiliates share a referral link and follow their commissions from their own dashboard.

What it lets them do

Learners are placed at their level in minutes and practise speaking with an AI partner any time, then earn certificates anyone can verify online. Partner organisations get licence keys and affiliates earn commissions.

Learners can now find their level for free, follow the lessons that match it, practise speaking with an AI partner at any hour and earn certificates anyone can verify online, with the same account on the website and in the apps, which are in beta. Organisations get licences for their learners and affiliates earn commissions, all from the same platform.
