Hire a web developer in Morocco: cost, time zone and how it works

If you want to hire a web developer in Morocco, you get three things that are hard to find together: working hours that match Europe (Morocco has been on GMT all year since 20 September 2026), lower costs than in Western Europe, and work you can check before you sign, because it's live. I'm a full-stack developer in Marrakech, and this is how hiring me from abroad works.

Why hire a web developer in Morocco?#

Monday, 9 a.m. in London. You send a message about a bug on the checkout page. With a team eight time zones away, the answer arrives while you're asleep, and the fix the day after. From Marrakech, it's 9 a.m. too.

That's the first reason. The others:

• Cost. IT consultancies that work from Morocco put the saving at 30% to 40% compared with France, and at least 20% compared with Eastern Europe. Those are act digital's figures, not mine, but they match what European companies come here for.
• Languages. Moroccan developers usually work in several languages. I work in English and Arabic, and I build sites in English, French, Arabic (right to left) and German.
• Distance. Marrakech is a short flight from most of Western Europe, so a kick-off meeting in person is a realistic option, not a trip around the world.

What time is it in Morocco?#

Morocco moved to GMT all year round on 20 September 2026, with no more clock changes in summer or during Ramadan. If you read an older guide that says "UTC+1", it's out of date. Here is what a Marrakech working day from 9:00 to 18:00 looks like for you:

In practice, European clients get the same working day, and American clients get their morning, which is when most decisions are made anyway.

Platforms I built for clients abroad#

• UpSkills: an e-learning platform for professional and soft skills, with a London address. Courses in English and French, paid by card, Wave, Western Union or Orange Money, so learners in several countries can pay the way they're used to.
• Polypro Academy: a language-learning platform with a website in English, French and Arabic, plus iOS and Android apps. The site and the apps share one backend, so a learner's progress is the same everywhere.
• Explorem: a recruitment agency that prepares Moroccan nurses for jobs in Germany. The site runs in English, Arabic and German, with separate pages for candidates and for German employers. I wrote up how the Explorem site was built.

How much does it cost to hire a web developer in Morocco?#

When you hire a web developer in Morocco through me, the price depends on what you need built: I price by scope, not by the hour of the day you happen to call. A focused first version with only the must-haves starts from about $1,000, and each extra module (payments, a dashboard, a mobile app, several languages) is priced separately. For ongoing work, like maintenance or new features, we agree on a day rate or a monthly retainer when we talk, once I know what the work involves.

How do payment and contracts work across borders?#

We agree on the currency, the payment method and the schedule when we talk, based on what suits your company. A common split is a deposit to start, then one payment per milestone.

Whatever the method, agree on it before the work starts, in writing: what's delivered, when, and what each payment covers. It protects both sides, and it makes the first invoice a formality instead of a negotiation.

Who owns the code and the servers?#

Whoever you hire, a web developer in Morocco or anywhere else, settle this first. With me, you do. The code is yours, in your own repository, and the platform runs on a server you control, not on mine. If we stop working together one day, nothing is held hostage: another developer can pick it up, and your site keeps running.

The stack is the same across my projects: Next.js, React and TypeScript for the web, Expo for the mobile apps, Stripe for card payments, and Docker to run it all on your server.

Freelancer, agency or marketplace?#

• A freelancer (like me): you talk to the person who writes the code, decisions are quick, and there's no layer of account managers. The limit is one person's hours.
• An agency: a team that can run several projects at once, with more process and a higher price. The right choice for a large build with a fixed deadline and many people involved.
• A marketplace (Upwork, Freelancer, Twine and others): a wide choice of profiles, reviews and a payment system in the middle. You still have to check each person's real work yourself.

What to ask before you hire anyone#

1. Can I open three projects you built, live, today?
2. Who owns the code, and where will it run?
3. How many hours will we share each day, and what's the time zone?
4. Which language will we work in, and which languages will the site be in?
5. What exactly is in the first version, and what does each extra cost?

A good developer answers all five without hesitating. If an answer is vague, that's your answer.
