Key takeaways
- The WhatsApp AI agent is Meta Business Agent, announced on 3 June 2026: it answers questions, recommends products, books appointments and closes sales.
- On the WhatsApp Business Platform it costs $2 per million tokens, about 4–5 US cents per message by Meta's estimate; getting started is free.
- Since 1 October 2026, replies to customers have 1,000 free messages a month per number, then they're charged; without a payment method they stop being delivered.
- On the same day Morocco left Meta's Rest of Africa region: a reply now costs $0.023 in Morocco against $0.004 there, almost 6 times more.
The WhatsApp AI agent is Meta Business Agent, announced on 3 June 2026: an AI that answers your customers on WhatsApp, recommends products, books appointments and can close a sale, day and night. It's free to start. On the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API) it costs about 4–5 US cents per message, by Meta's estimate. And since 1 October 2026, Morocco has its own, higher WhatsApp rates.
If you run a riad, a clinic, a school or a shop in Morocco, both changes concern you. Here's what the WhatsApp AI agent does, what it costs, what changed on 1 October, and the part where you'll need a developer. I haven't tested the agent myself yet, in Darija or otherwise: everything below comes from Meta's own pages, read on 20 October 2026.
What is the WhatsApp AI agent?#
Meta presented it at its Conversations event in London, in a post titled "Introducing Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp". By Meta's description, your Business Agent:
- answers questions specific to your business,
- makes product recommendations from your catalogue,
- books appointments and qualifies incoming leads,
- closes sales,
- and lets you decide when a team member steps in.
Meta says it responds "in your customer's local language using your tone", around the clock. Whether that includes good Moroccan Darija is something I'll only believe once I've tested it: Darija is where most AI tools still stumble.
The numbers, as Meta gives them: more than one million businesses already use a Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger, and there are more than one billion active threads with businesses on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram every day.

What changes for a small business?#
Picture a riad at 2 a.m. A guest asks if the pool is heated, another wants a room for Friday, a third asks for the price of airport pick-up. Today, either the owner answers half asleep, or the guests wait until morning and some of them book somewhere else.

That's the job Meta has in mind for the WhatsApp AI agent: the routine questions, at any hour, with a person stepping in for the rest. It doesn't remove the work of keeping the answers right. It moves it: you write the information once, and you read the conversations in the morning.
How much does the WhatsApp AI agent cost?#
It depends on how you use it. Meta's announcement says getting started with the Business Agent is free, and that "in the coming months" businesses will access it through paid subscriptions, with options for every size.
On the WhatsApp Business Platform, the version connected to software, Meta's pricing page (updated 30 September 2026) is precise:
- $2.00 per million tokens, one global rate, for every message the agent sends.
- About 4–5 US cents per message: Meta says one message typically uses 20,000 to 25,000 tokens.
- A simple question costs less, a long one more. Meta's own example: "At what time do you open?" takes 4 messages and about 16–20 cents.
- No free messages for the agent, even in the free window that opens when a customer comes from a WhatsApp ad.

Meta also compares its agent with a third-party AI answering through ordinary service messages. For users in Brazil, its estimate is about 9–10 cents per message with a high-complexity third-party AI, against 4–5 cents with Business Agent: roughly $968 against $400–500 for 10,000 replies. It's Meta comparing itself to others, and Brazil's delivery price isn't Morocco's, so take it as an order of size.
What changed on 1 October 2026 for WhatsApp in Morocco?#
Two things, both on the WhatsApp Business Platform:
- Replies to customers are paid again. Service messages (the replies you send within 24 hours of a customer's message, by a person or a third-party AI) now have a free tier of 1,000 per month for each business phone number. From the 1,001st, they're charged. Unused free messages don't roll over.
- Morocco left the "Rest of Africa" region. It now has its own line on Meta's rate card, with higher prices for marketing, utility and authentication messages.
Meta's USD rate card, effective 1 October 2026, per delivered message:
| Message category | Morocco | Rest of Africa |
|---|---|---|
| Service (replies) | $0.023 | $0.004 |
| Utility (confirmations, reminders) | $0.023 | $0.004 |
| Authentication (codes) | $0.023 | $0.004 |
| Marketing | $0.0414 | $0.0225 |
| Meta Business Agent | $2.00 per 1M tokens | $2.00 per 1M tokens |

So a reply that would cost $0.004 in the Rest of Africa region costs $0.023 to a customer in Morocco: almost 6 times more. Two details soften it: Meta only charges for messages from the business to the customer, never for what customers send you, and only when a message is delivered.
One detail can hurt: Meta writes that if your account has no payment method, it delivers service messages within the free tier but stops delivering them after it. In other words, your 1,001st reply of the month doesn't arrive. And prices can move again: Meta may update them on the first day of each quarter (1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October).

This rate card is for the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API). If you answer by hand in the free WhatsApp Business app, you're not on it. I explain the difference between the link, the app and the API in WhatsApp booking: link, app or API?.
Where do you need a developer?#
Setting the WhatsApp AI agent up to answer general questions takes minutes, by Meta's account. Making it useful for your business is another job. Three places where it needs a developer:
- Connecting it to your system. To say which rooms are free on Friday, which doctor has a slot, or where an order is, the agent has to read your bookings, your calendar or your customer file. Meta's Business Agent Platform connects it to "hundreds of systems like Shopify and Zendesk". A riad's own booking tool or a custom CRM isn't on that list: someone has to connect it.
- Choosing between Meta's WhatsApp AI agent and another AI. Meta's agent is billed per token with no free messages; another AI answering through service messages gets 1,000 free replies a month in Morocco, then $0.023 each, plus the AI's own cost. Which one is cheaper depends on your volume.
- Watching the bill. Prices now differ by country, change up to four times a year, and stop your replies if there's no payment method. A dashboard that counts messages and cost per month avoids the surprise.
I wrote about another AI agent that works on its own, OpenAI's always-on dots; and if you're wondering about AI and Darija in general, see the Darija AI models from Morocco and Mistral AI.
Want the agent to know your bookings and your customers?#
That's the part I build: a customer system connected to WhatsApp, with your bookings, your customers and what each conversation costs in one place. When I've tested the WhatsApp AI agent in Darija, I'll share what I find. If your business answers a lot of customers on WhatsApp, tell me how you work today and we'll see what fits.

Yes, on 1 October 2026. Morocco left the Rest of Africa region on Meta's rate card: service, utility and authentication messages now cost $0.023 each and marketing $0.0414, against $0.004 and $0.0225 in the Rest of Africa. Each business number keeps 1,000 free service messages a month.
Do I need a developer to use the WhatsApp AI agent?+
Not to start: Meta says it can be set up in minutes. To answer with your real availability, appointments or orders, it has to be connected to your booking tool or customer system, and that connection is a developer's job.
