Key takeaways
- WhatsApp booking has three levels: a click-to-chat link, the WhatsApp Business app, and the WhatsApp Business Platform (API).
- A wa.me link with a pre-filled message turns "salam, dispo?" into a request with a date and a number of guests, and it's only a link.
- The Business app adds a profile, greeting and away messages, quick replies, labels and a catalog, but a person still answers each chat.
- The API automates confirmations and reminders, with Meta charging per delivered message; for most small businesses, a booking form confirmed on WhatsApp is enough.
WhatsApp booking comes in three levels. A click-to-chat link on your website opens a chat with a message already written. The WhatsApp Business app adds a profile, quick replies, away messages and labels, but you still answer by hand. The WhatsApp Business Platform (the API) lets software answer and confirm, and Meta charges per message. Most small businesses in Morocco need the first two.
Why do guests in Morocco book on WhatsApp?#
Saturday, eleven at night. Your phone buzzes: "salam, dispo?" No date, no name, no number of guests. Then another one. Then the same question from someone who asked yesterday.
Guests book on WhatsApp because it's already open on their phone. No account to create, no form to fill, and a real person on the other side. For a riad, a restaurant, a clinic or a training centre, that's the strength of WhatsApp booking: people trust a conversation.
The problem is never WhatsApp itself. It's the missing information, the questions you answer again and again, and the bookings that live only in one phone. Each level below fixes a bit more of that.

Level 1: what is a WhatsApp click-to-chat link?#
It's a link that opens a chat with your number, even if the guest never saved it. WhatsApp's click to chat help page gives the format: https://wa.me/ followed by your full number in international format, without the "+", zeros, brackets or dashes. It works on phones and on WhatsApp Web.
The useful part for bookings is the pre-filled message. Add ?text= and your message, URL-encoded, and it appears already typed in the guest's chat. So instead of "salam, dispo?", you receive "Hello, I'd like a table for 2 on Saturday at 8 pm". The guest can edit it before pressing send.
- On your website: a "Book on WhatsApp" button on the booking page, the menu page or each room or course page, each with its own first line.
- The official button: WhatsApp offers a branded "Chat on WhatsApp" button in green and white, in three sizes. Its help page notes it's only available in English for now.
- On paper: the same link in a QR code, on the table, the reception desk or a flyer. My free QR code generator has a WhatsApp mode: type your number and the message, and download the code or a poster to print.

For level 1, that's the whole WhatsApp booking set-up: a link. No subscription, no software to set up, nothing to break. It's where I tell most small businesses to start.

Level 2: what does the WhatsApp Business app add to WhatsApp booking?#
The WhatsApp Business app is the version made for small businesses. According to WhatsApp's own feature page, the tools that matter most for bookings are these:
- Business profile: your logo, a description, your opening hours and your website, in one place.
- Greeting message: sent automatically when a new customer starts a conversation. Use it to ask for what you need: "date, number of guests, your name".
- Away messages: sent automatically outside your business hours, so the guest knows when you'll answer.
- Quick replies: shortcuts for the messages you send all the time: prices, address, how to pay a deposit.
- Labels: sort your chats, for example "new request", "waiting for deposit", "confirmed".
- Catalog: your rooms, menus, treatments or courses with prices, grouped into collections, that you can share as links.
Quick replies alone change the evening. The fifteenth time someone asks for the address, you type a shortcut instead of the address. You stay polite, and so does your thumb.
But it's still you answering, from one phone. Meta lists linking up to 10 devices and agents as a Meta Verified feature, so a small team can share the work. Still, every booking stays a chat that a person reads and confirms, not a list you can search by date.
Level 3: when do you need the WhatsApp Business Platform (API)?#
The WhatsApp Business Platform is an API: software sends and receives the messages instead of a person. Meta's developer overview lists sharing appointment availability and reminders among what its Cloud API can do. This is the level behind automated WhatsApp booking: the guest picks a date in the chat, the system checks availability and sends the confirmation.
Two rules shape everything at this level, both from Meta's pricing page (updated 30 September 2026):
- You can reply freely for 24 hours. When a guest writes to you, a 24-hour customer service window opens, and it resets with each new message from them. Inside it, you can send normal messages. Outside it, you can only send pre-approved message templates.
- Templates have categories. Marketing (promotions), utility (transactional, like a booking confirmation or a reminder) and authentication (codes). A booking confirmation or a reminder the day before belongs in utility, which Meta describes as transactional or informational.
How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost?#
Meta's model, as its pricing page describes it on the date I read it (8 October 2026):
- Per message, since 1 July 2025. Meta charges per delivered message from the business to the user. Messages from your guests to you are not charged.
- The price depends on two things: the message category and the country code of the guest's number. Morocco (+212) has its own line on Meta's rate card.
- Some messages are free. Each business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages a month (replies inside the 24-hour window), and messages in a free entry point window, opened when you reply to someone who wrote to you from a click-to-WhatsApp ad, are free for up to 7 days.
- Prices move. Meta says it may update pricing on the first day of each quarter, so up to four times a year. Check the current rate card before you budget.
Meta's fees are only part of the bill. The Cloud API is meant for developers, so either a developer connects it to your booking system, or you subscribe to a company that already did. If you go through a provider, ask for its own price on top of Meta's per-message fees, and compare the total, not just the headline.
WhatsApp booking or a booking form on your website?#
Often the answer is both: the form collects the booking, WhatsApp confirms it. That's the method I use on my own projects.
On the riad website I developed for Caravan Serai, the booking form asks for the dates, the suite, the number of adults, a name, a phone number and an email. A guest sends a request in about a minute, and the hotel confirms it. Every request has the same information, and none of it is lost in a chat.
This site works the same way. When someone fills in my contact form with a Moroccan or international number, the notification I get has a WhatsApp button that opens a chat with them, with my first line already typed in their language. One tap, and I'm answering a person who already told me what they need. In the custom CRMs I build, the WhatsApp clicks are tracked, so the team knows which leads have been contacted.

- Stay in the chat if you take a few bookings a day and one person answers. A wa.me link and the Business app are enough.
- Add a form when you're full most days, several people handle bookings, or you need dates and deposits in one list. Confirm on WhatsApp in one tap.
- Consider the API when the volume is high enough that sending reminders and confirmations by hand costs you more than the messages and the set-up.
Which level fits a riad, a restaurant, a clinic or a training centre?#
- Restaurant: a wa.me link on the menu page and a QR code on the table. In my guide to restaurant websites in Morocco, a WhatsApp link is one of the three ways to book a table.
- Riad or guesthouse: a booking request form, confirmed on WhatsApp, and the Business app's catalog for the rooms. Every direct booking avoids the Booking.com commission.
- Clinic: an appointment request form with a button on every page, then a WhatsApp confirmation. More in clinic website design.
- Training centre: one WhatsApp link per course, with the course name already in the message, so you know what the person is asking about before reading further.
If your guests write in several languages, write one pre-filled message per language version of your site. The guest who sees the message in their own language is the one who presses send. I explain the rest in multilingual websites.
Do you want WhatsApp bookings without the chaos?#
Tell me what you run, how guests book today and how many requests you get. I'll tell you honestly which level is enough, and if you need more, I can build a website with a booking form and WhatsApp buttons, or a custom CRM that tracks every request. Ask for a quote here.
Frequently asked questions
How do I create a WhatsApp booking link?+
Use https://wa.me/ followed by your full number in international format, without the plus sign, zeros or dashes. Add ?text= and a URL-encoded message to have the booking request already written when the guest opens the chat.
Is the WhatsApp Business app enough for bookings?+
For a few bookings a day answered by one person, yes. Its greeting and away messages, quick replies and labels save time, but every booking stays a chat that someone has to read and confirm by hand.
How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost?+
Meta charges per delivered message from the business, with a rate that depends on the message category and the guest's country code. Messages from guests are free, and each number gets 1,000 free service messages a month. If you use a provider, its own price comes on top.
Is a booking form better than WhatsApp booking?+
Often the best answer is both: the form collects dates, guests and contact details in one list, and you confirm on WhatsApp in one tap. A chat alone works when bookings are few and one person answers.
